This wholesome banana bread with chocolate chips is a simple, forgiving recipe that delivers a moist, tender crumb with pockets of melted dark chocolate. Made with whole wheat flour and honey, it’s a healthier treat perfect for breakfast, snacks, or any time you need a warm hug.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed (about 1½ cups)
  • ⅓ cup honey (or maple syrup for vegan)
  • ¼ cup melted coconut oil (or unsalted butter)
  • 2 large eggs (or flax eggs for vegan)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups whole wheat pastry flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips (plus extra for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until smooth with a few small lumps.
  3. Add honey, melted coconut oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Whisk until well combined and glossy.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together whole wheat pastry flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
  5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Fold gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined—do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in ½ cup dark chocolate chips. Reserve a small handful for topping.
  7. Scrape the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle reserved chocolate chips on top.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, checking at 45 minutes. The bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. If browning too quickly, tent loosely with foil.
  9. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then lift out using parchment paper and transfer to a wire rack. Cool completely before slicing (about 1 hour).

Notes

For best results, use very ripe bananas (brown-spotted). Do not overmix the batter to avoid dense bread. Let the bread cool completely before slicing for clean pieces. Toasted leftover slices are delicious.
