These soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies feature browned butter for a rich, nutty flavor and a perfect balance of texture. Easy to make with simple ingredients, they are a comforting homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, browned
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (165g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups (270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: Place 1 cup (226g) of unsalted butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently as the butter melts and begins to foam. Watch closely as it turns a golden brown and gives off a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and transfer to a bowl; let cool for 10 minutes.
  2. Mix sugars and eggs: In a large bowl, combine 3/4 cup granulated sugar and 3/4 cup packed brown sugar. Add the cooled brown butter and whisk until combined. Beat in 2 large eggs, one at a time, then stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
  3. Combine dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 teaspoon salt.
  4. Incorporate dry into wet: Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips: Add 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips and fold evenly into the dough.
  6. Chill the dough (optional): Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes for thicker cookies and more developed flavor.
  7. Preheat oven and prepare baking sheets: Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  8. Scoop and bake: Drop dough by rounded tablespoons or use a cookie scoop onto prepared sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden but centers remain soft.
  9. Cool and enjoy: Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Watch the butter carefully when browning to avoid burning. Do not overmix the dough to keep cookies tender. Chilling the dough helps prevent spreading and enhances flavor. Rotate baking sheets halfway through baking for even cooking. For extra gooey chocolate, add chunks of high-quality chocolate.
