A cozy fall snack featuring crisp apple slices paired with a homemade buttery caramel dipping sauce and a tender bar base. Easy to make and perfect for sharing or solo indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium-sized crisp apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), sliced thinly
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup whole or 2% milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8 inch pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon baking powder.
  3. In another bowl, beat 1 large egg with 1/4 cup milk until smooth. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir just until combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Bake for 18-20 minutes until edges are golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack, about 30 minutes.
  5. While the base cools, make the caramel dipping sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 6 tablespoons butter. Stir in 1 cup packed dark brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional). Cook, stirring constantly, about 3 minutes until sugar dissolves and mixture bubbles gently.
  6. Slowly add 1/2 cup heavy cream and continue stirring. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes until caramel thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of sea salt if using. Let cool slightly.
  7. Wash and core apples, then slice into thin wedges about 1/4 inch thick just before serving.
  8. Cut the bar base into squares or rectangles and serve alongside apple slices and warm caramel sauce for dipping.

Notes

Do not overbake the bar base to keep it tender. Stir caramel constantly to avoid burning. Slice apples just before serving to keep crisp. Rewarm caramel gently if it thickens too much. For dairy-free, substitute butter and cream with coconut oil and coconut milk. For gluten-free, use almond flour instead of all-purpose flour.
