This easy slow cooker spiced pear butter is made with ripe pears, warm spices, and a touch of vanilla. It’s the perfect fall spread for toast, biscuits, cheese boards, and more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds pears (Bosc or Bartlett), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, core, and chop pears into roughly 1-inch chunks.
  2. Add chopped pears, granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla extract, and salt to a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Stir to coat.
  3. Cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until pears are very soft and falling apart.
  4. Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth. (Alternatively, let cool slightly and blend in batches in a regular blender.)
  5. Continue cooking on low with the lid slightly ajar for 1-2 more hours, until thickened to desired consistency (coats the back of a spoon).
  6. Test thickness by spooning a small amount onto a chilled plate; if no liquid separates, it’s ready.
  7. Ladle hot pear butter into sterilized jars, leaving ¼-inch headspace. Wipe rims, seal, and process in a water bath for 10 minutes for shelf stability, or let cool and refrigerate.

Notes

For best flavor, use ripe but firm pears. Adjust sugar based on pear sweetness. Do not skip the final uncovered cooking step to achieve perfect spreadable texture. Pear butter thickens slightly as it cools.
