A quick and easy non-alcoholic Halloween sangria made with blood oranges, pomegranate seeds, apple cider, and sparkling water. This spooky ‘witch’s brew’ comes together in under 10 minutes and is perfect for kids’ Halloween parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 45 medium blood oranges, sliced into thin rounds then quartered
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 cups apple cider (unsweetened or lightly sweetened)
  • 3 cups sparkling water (plain or lemon-flavored)
  • 1/4 cup orange juice (fresh squeezed or good quality store-bought)
  • 12 tablespoons honey or agave syrup (optional, to taste)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional garnish: cinnamon sticks, star anise, or fresh rosemary sprigs

Instructions

  1. Wash the blood oranges thoroughly. Using a sharp knife, slice them into thin rounds about 1/4 inch thick (about 5-6 slices per orange). Cut each round into quarters. Set aside about 8-10 quarter-slices for garnish.
  2. Place the blood orange quarters and pomegranate seeds in the bottom of a large pitcher (at least 2-quart capacity). Arrange them so the layers are visible through the glass.
  3. Pour the apple cider and orange juice over the fruit. Stir gently with a long-handled spoon. If using honey or agave, add it now and stir until fully dissolved. Taste the mixture—it should be slightly tart but pleasant. If too sharp, add another tablespoon of sweetener.
  4. Cover the pitcher and let it rest at room temperature for 15-20 minutes. This allows the blood orange slices to release their juices and color into the liquid, turning it a deep red.
  5. Just before serving, pour in the sparkling water and add a generous amount of ice cubes. Stir gently to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  6. Drop in the reserved blood orange quarters and any optional garnishes (cinnamon sticks, star anise, or rosemary sprigs). Pour into glasses, making sure each serving gets some fruit pieces. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, don’t add the sparkling water too early or it will go flat. The resting step is crucial for color and flavor—don’t skip it. If making ahead, prepare the fruit and juice base up to 24 hours in advance and store in the fridge; add sparkling water and ice just before serving. Use large ice cubes to prevent dilution. For a single serving, scale down ingredients and use a large mason jar.
