A simple and creamy slow cooker apple butter recipe with warm fall spices, perfect for spreading on toast or adding to oatmeal. Made with a mix of sweet and tart apples, it’s an easy, crowd-pleasing fall staple.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds (1.8 kg) apples (mix of Fuji and Granny Smith)
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water

Instructions

  1. Wash, core, and roughly chop about 4 pounds (1.8 kg) of apples. Leave skins on for extra texture or peel for smoother apple butter. This takes about 15 minutes.
  2. Add chopped apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla extract, lemon juice, salt, and water into the slow cooker. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours until apples are soft and fragrant. Alternatively, cook on high for 4 to 5 hours but watch closely to avoid burning.
  4. Use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker to puree the mixture until smooth and creamy. If using a regular blender, cool slightly and blend in batches carefully.
  5. If apple butter is too thick, stir in warm water a tablespoon at a time. Taste and adjust sweetness or spices as needed.
  6. Let cool to room temperature, then transfer to clean jars or containers. Refrigerate for up to two weeks or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for balanced flavor. Leave skins on for extra fiber and texture. Blend carefully to avoid splatters. Adjust spices gradually. Store in airtight containers and reheat gently with a splash of water if needed. Lemon juice prevents browning and brightens flavor.
