This Better Than Starbucks Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso is a nostalgic, hand-shaken coffee drink that combines rich espresso, sweet brown sugar, and creamy oat milk for a perfectly frothy and comforting cup. It’s quick, easy, and better than any drive-thru version.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots of espresso (about 2 ounces)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 3/4 cup oat milk

Instructions

  1. Brew your espresso. Start by pulling two shots of espresso, about 2 ounces total. If using a Moka pot, brew according to manufacturer’s instructions. Set aside.
  2. Combine the sugar and spices. In a mason jar or cocktail shaker, add the 2 tablespoons of packed brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a pinch of cinnamon if using.
  3. Add the hot espresso. Pour the hot espresso directly over the brown sugar mixture. Stir gently with a spoon for about 10 seconds to combine.
  4. Add the ice. Drop in about 1 cup of ice cubes.
  5. Shake it like you mean it. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds.
  6. Pour over fresh ice. Fill your serving glass with fresh ice cubes.
  7. Top with oat milk. Pour the 3/4 cup of oat milk over the shaken espresso. For layers, pour slowly over the back of a spoon.
  8. Give it a gentle stir. Use a long spoon to stir everything together, or let it swirl naturally.
  9. Taste and adjust. Add more brown sugar if desired, or another shot of espresso for a stronger drink.

Notes

Use room temperature oat milk for best flavor. Pack brown sugar firmly to ensure it dissolves. Shake until arm gets tired for optimal frothiness. For a hot version, skip the ice and use steamed oat milk.
