A fun and easy recipe for crispy, flaky mummy-wrapped hot dogs perfect for Halloween parties or casual gatherings. These snacks combine buttery puff pastry with savory hot dogs and playful mustard eyes for a crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 hot dogs (beef or pork, quality brands like Nathan’s or Hebrew National recommended)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed (about 12x12 inches)
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)
  • Yellow mustard (for eyes)
  • Optional: sesame seeds or poppy seeds for topping
  • Optional: cheese slices (cheddar or mozzarella) to wrap inside
  • Optional: smoked paprika or garlic powder to mix into egg wash

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth out creases.
  3. Slice the pastry into thin strips about 1/2 inch wide using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  4. Wrap each hot dog diagonally with 3-4 strips of puff pastry, leaving small gaps to create a mummy effect.
  5. Beat the egg with water to make egg wash and brush it evenly over the wrapped hot dogs.
  6. Use a toothpick or small knife tip to dot two tiny spots of yellow mustard on each hot dog for eyes.
  7. Place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes until pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  8. Let cool on a cooling rack for 5 minutes before serving warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Do not over-thaw puff pastry; keep strips consistent in width for even baking. Leave small gaps in wrapping to prevent sogginess. Egg wash is essential for golden color and crispiness. For extra flavor, add smoked paprika or garlic powder to egg wash. Cheese slices can be wrapped inside for a melty surprise. If pastry isn’t browning evenly, broil for 30 seconds but watch closely to avoid burning. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 2 days; reheat in oven at 350°F for 8-10 minutes. Freeze individually wrapped for up to 2 months.
