A nostalgic and easy-to-make pressed sandwich featuring smoky ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, tangy pickles, and mustard on crispy Cuban or French bread. Perfect for lunch or casual dinners, this sandwich delivers a perfect balance of flavors and textures.

  • 1 loaf Cuban or French bread, sliced lengthwise
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 6 to 8 slices dill pickles
  • 6 to 8 slices Swiss cheese (Jarlsberg or Emmental recommended)
  • 6 ounces roast pork, thinly sliced
  • 6 ounces ham, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Preheat your sandwich press or skillet to medium-high heat (about 375°F / 190°C).
  2. Slice your bread horizontally, about 8–10 inches long for individual sandwiches. Spread softened butter evenly on the outer sides of both bread halves.
  3. Spread yellow mustard generously on the inside of the bottom half of the bread.
  4. Layer the roast pork evenly over the mustard, about 6 ounces, followed by the ham slices, then the Swiss cheese.
  5. Add pickle slices on top of the cheese—usually 6 to 8 slices.
  6. Close the sandwich with the top half of the bread, butter side facing out.
  7. Place the sandwich in the preheated press or skillet. Press down gently but firmly. If using a skillet, place a weighted lid or wrapped brick on top to apply pressure.
  8. Cook for about 4–5 minutes, checking halfway through to avoid burning. The sandwich should be golden brown and crispy, with melted cheese oozing slightly.
  9. Carefully remove the sandwich from the press or skillet. Let it rest for a minute.
  10. Slice diagonally or in halves for a classic presentation. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use softened butter for even spreading to achieve a golden, crispy crust. Avoid overstuffing the sandwich to prevent sogginess and difficulty pressing. If browning too fast, lower heat and cook longer. Let the sandwich rest briefly after cooking to prevent cheese from running out. For dairy-free or vegetarian options, substitute ingredients accordingly.
