A quick and easy recipe for perfectly crispy air fryer French fries that are golden on the outside and tender inside, using simple ingredients and minimal oil.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 medium russet potatoes (about 1.5 pounds or 700 grams), peeled or unpeeled
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or avocado oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste after cooking
  • Optional seasonings: garlic powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, or dried herbs
  • Cold water (enough to soak the cut potatoes)

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel the potatoes (optional). Rinse well under cold water.
  2. Cut the potatoes into fries about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick for even cooking.
  3. Soak the cut fries in a large bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours to remove excess starch.
  4. Drain and pat the fries thoroughly dry using paper towels or a clean kitchen towel.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Toss the fries with 2 tablespoons of oil and 1 teaspoon of salt until evenly coated.
  7. Arrange the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them. Cook in batches if necessary.
  8. Cook for 15-20 minutes, shaking or flipping the fries halfway through to ensure even cooking.
  9. After cooking, season with additional salt or preferred seasonings if desired.
  10. Serve immediately for the best crunch and flavor.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure crispiness. Pat fries dry thoroughly after soaking to avoid sogginess. Preheat the air fryer before cooking. Shake or flip fries halfway through cooking for even crisping. Adjust cooking time or temperature if fries are not crispy enough. Leftover fries can be reheated in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes to regain crispiness.
