These crispy air fryer BBQ chicken wings feature a sticky, tangy glaze and perfectly crackling skin, delivering a quick and easy finger-licking dinner without the mess of deep frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds chicken wings, fresh or thawed, tips removed
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ cup BBQ sauce (e.g., Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels to ensure crispiness.
  2. Toss wings in a large bowl with baking powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika until evenly coated.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Arrange wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket or on a wire rack without overlapping; cook in batches if necessary.
  5. Air fry wings for 25 minutes total, flipping halfway at 12 minutes, until golden brown and skin is crispy. Ensure internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  6. While wings cook, whisk together BBQ sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce (if using) in a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring until slightly thickened.
  7. Transfer cooked wings to a large bowl and toss with the warm sticky glaze until fully coated.
  8. Optional: Return glazed wings to the air fryer for 3-5 minutes at 390°F (200°C) to caramelize the glaze.
  9. Serve immediately with celery sticks or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Pat wings dry before seasoning for best crispiness. Use baking powder, not baking soda, to avoid bitterness. Flip wings halfway through cooking for even crisping. Glaze after cooking to keep skin crispy. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. For extra sticky glaze, return wings to air fryer briefly after glazing.
